This is my blog. It's been going for a couple of years now. I'll keep writing in it from time to time, often for no particular reason.

Just not meant to be :-(

Iranian visa has been rejected.

'Tehran says no'

'You must go through tourist agency' - that is my only explanation. The guy was apologetic but only spoke about 9 words of English. What could I do? What do I do?

A little part of me was expecting this. Another part thinks it's funny. And another part thinks it is another good test of the patience. But the biggest part is desperately disappointed that everything has fallen to pieces. I am a bıt dazed, too dısappoınted to be angry or frustrated really. Oh well. Another tıme I suppose.

But time is limited so I have to think about what to do and where to go - where I don't need a visa. These are my parameters:
  • I have an Easyjet flight from Istanbul to London that I can change. The only alternative destination is Basel-Mulhouse in Germany on the 18th of Sept.
  • I have a flight booked from Dubai to London on the 2nd October - which I will be able to get back on insurance ıf I don't use ıt.
  • The only countries in Europe I haven't seen are Italy, Germany and the Balkans.
  • If I do Europe I want to hıtchıke - cheaper and wıll be a lame substıtute for the adventure of clımbıng Damavand near Tehran and gettıng a boat across the gulf.

So what do I do?

Fly to Basel and make it up from there?

Hıtchıke from Istanbul to London?

Fly from Istanbul to some other country I haven't consıdered?

Fly to Dubaı and spend two weeks checkıng out what I can ın that regıon?.

Stıll thınkıng. Anyone have any good ıdeas? I am plannıng on leavıng tomorrow - wherever I go.

I am off to the Blue Mosque to see ıf Allah has any answers.

That really sucks - time for regime change in Tehran I'd say ;)

The only suggestion I'd make is a trip to the caucases - Azerbijan, Armenia and Georgio...it's meant to be spectacular, plus I'm sure visas would be easier and then you could travel along the black sea coast (I've heard it's pretty cool up there as well)...

Not sure how that would fit into timing with flights - but plenty of mountains to climb in those parts, plus a relatively un-touristed part of the world...

If you're really keen for Iran, they issue 7 day visas at the international airports in Tehran - Rob and I got one coming back from Kabul...It costs $50, so if you can get a flight into Tehran you could still see some Iran (maybe Tehran-Istanbul return??)

Sorry about the bad luck with the Visas...just not fair.

Thanks for that - just had a look at the visa requirements for those countries and my source says I need letters of invitation for all of them.

I'll check out the cost of flying into Tehran - but is looking like over $400AUD and not departing for another week.

Tossing up between the Balkans, Oktoberfest and Dubai now.

Hmmmm.... Well two weeks in Dubai would be a waste... unless you went to Oman and Yemen... That could be pretty cool. Oman would be no dramas visa wise, not too sure about Yemen. One warning about travel insurance is the minimum claim amount. For my camera I missed the first $200 of my claim, so you might not get all money back on flight...

I hope Allah had some answers, although from what I gather in these parts any communication from Allah is "shit happens"...

Hitchhiking would make up for the lost adventures I think....

Have to agree at the level of shitness of visa rejection. Think Lucas has a point with hitchiking - am sure some of the most interesting (and dullest) parts of travelling are due to the characters met along the way. Otherwise, you always have somewhere to crash on the way back to London - flights from here are dirt cheap, and I dunno if there is anything in the Benelux which you really need to see, but it can be seen in a day!

Syria?

Also - Balkans would be pretty cool...get your mullet ready and stone-wash denims out if you're heading to Fmr Yugolsavia...

Good luck

Hmmm... definately sucks, but hey there's some options & although things aren't how you planned they could lead to some pretty kewl outcomes. Usually the best experiences come from the unexpected.
Keep your chin up, all will wrk out!!!
Invincible remember!!!
Take care,
